Paw Paw

Paw Paw

Native to Southern Mexico and Central America, the Pawpaw (Papaya) is a short lived, vigorously growing, herbaceous shrub that averages 3-4m in height. Pawpaw display attractive tropical looking foliage that forms on the upper part of the stem and bears yellow, orange, red or pinkish coloured, pear shaped fruit depending upon variety. The fruit is best described as tasting somewhat like a cantaloupe, being rather sweet and juicy.

  • Plant & Growing Tips:

Tends to perform best on light, well drained soils with a minimum topsoil depth of 0.5m.

Thrives when planted in high organic content soils of the tropics, but is adaptable to various soil types except heavy clay soils.

Pawpaw loves lots of sun and warmth, so the ideal location is the hottest place around your yard where no other plants seem happy.

Provide ample irrigation via under tree sprinkling or overhead trickling, during periods where the minimum monthly rainfall is expected to drop below 100mm.

Ensure soils are moist during the warmer months and dry in the cooler periods.

Pawpaw will succumb to salty laden breezes, water or soils.

Keep protected from strong winds and frosts. Plants will tolerate light freezes as long as some form of overhead protection is provided.

No pruning is required. Although, some growers prefer to cut back established plants to encourage multiple trunks.

Plant out seedlings in February and March, except for warmer areas where planting can be delayed until April.

Plant rows 3-3.5m apart with plants spaced 1.5m apart within the rows.
