Chick Peas

A member of the legume family, the chickpea is a type of pulse which have seedpods that contain two to three peas per seedpod. This winter crop is rather versatile, being prepared and eaten in various ways especially throughout the Middle East and India. In fact, India is the largest buyer of Australian produced chickpeas. The chickpea is a valuable rotation crop with barley and wheat.

    Stage: At Planting

    Rate: 200 - 300kg/Ha (Dryland), 300 - 400kg/Ha (Irrigated)

    Application Method

    Apply by using either gravity feed openers or air drills to sub-surface band the fertiliser 2.5cm (1") below or to the side of the seed at planting and in a 3cm band.


    Application Considerations

    Rates should be reduced by 50% for very sandy soil sand may be increased by 30% for heavy textured soils or where soil moisture conditions at planting are excellent. Application rate can be increased by 50% in poor soils

    Rates should be reduced by 50% when planting equipment with narrow slit openers is used (the fertiliser concentration is increased around the seed).

    Rates may be increased by 50% when air seeders are used operating at high pressures with wide openers. Air seeders spread the fertiliser bands when operating at high pressures reducing the fertiliser concentration around the seed.
